We took them to the Cinque Terre, an area of Italy none of us had ever visited previously. I think it is safe to say that neither Richard nor I will be visiting that area of Italy again. If you want the details, send me an email.
The End.
PS. We were not robbed or treated poorly.
We tried to go there the summer before last when we were living in Heidelberg. We arrived late at night and slept in a horrible hotel. When we woke up the next morning the area was completely covered with fog. Never got to see anything in these pictures. Love picture 2 and 5! Would love to know why you wouldn't go back. WOW! You guys covered a lot of Italy this summer!
ReplyDeleteThe short version: too many American tourists, not enough Italians; too much catering to the likes of those tourists, not enough "Boungiorno's"; too much money for too little service.
DeleteThere are SO many beautiful places in this country, SO much to learn & discover.
I learned nothing there & heard English more than Italian. All day. Everywhere.
Not a joy for me.

Hah! I recently had a friend ask me if she should go there and I dug up my old blog post on our visit and it was all negative. I was actually embarrassed by my bad attitude and then told her, oh but I am sure your experience will be different!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking up your post. I am sure that the bad attitude is warranted.

Too many tourists?
ReplyDeleteToo many tourists and WAY too much catering to the tourists. So very often it didn't feel like Italy. It was quite a surreal experience & not one we enjoyed. There is so much hype in this community about it, but for us it was a huge disappointment.

We went there years ago and loved it ... Maybe it hadn't been "discovered" yet, or maybe we were still too touristy ourselves!
