in the kitchen this week

Have I mentioned that I have an entire week at home alone?
This may be the greatest Christmas gift of all! (Don't judge...alone time is scarce in these parts.)
I've been busy in the kitchen, and even with my crappy small European oven, I've made some tasty treats to share with neighbors.

The family favorite is the ricotta cookie. Don't let the name fool you; these cookies are delicious! I follow the eggless recipe exactly but do modify the glaze a bit by adding a dash of almond extract. They are billed as "Italian" on some websites, but I've never seen them here. Young One brought a couple to school this week for her mid-morning snack and shared with a couple of classmates. They quickly declared that they didn't like them and told her that Americans just have different tastes. Funny girls...but perhaps a bit of truth to that. Young One will not eat most Italian sweets.

The only thing missing are the decorated cut-out gingerbread cookies for Santa. That's a job for the entire family to tackle this weekend.

How is your baking going?

  2. AWESOME! I'm going to sneak in some Bourbon balls. I *love* your use of whiskey, btw. I think you and I would get along juuuust fine :)

  3. We made the Ricotta cookies last year. My children love them. While many italian desserts are yummy, many are dry and lack very little flavor.

  4. Katy,
The love affair with the Bourbon is a fairly new thing for me...i do enjoy it these days! The recipe I used for Bourbon balls said that they would get better with time; I've held off a couple of days on tasting them but will try it tonight!
    Emily,
I'd much rather be going to see the Nutcracker! It's just not a big thing in Italy.... :(
