Yep. Absolutely in love with this. I'm not sure where I can take it from here, but I'm looking forward to giving it a try, especially since I don't know what the heck I'm doing.

autumn in budapest

When you visit Budapest, contact Tamas for lodging: he was incredibly kind and the apartments near the Opera House were perfect.

Have an absolutely lovely day.

walk with me | Costozza

We spent a good part of Sunday exploring the nearby village of Costozza, again.
Man, do we live in a beautiful part of this country, this region, this province.

'
The word "Costozza" is derived from the Latin "custos / custodia," the same as the modern English word "custody" and essentially means "to keep, to protect." The village of Costozza is filled with secret caves and underground passageways, many man made, that have provided protection through the ages, from storage of the local wine to shelter from invading armies.

Beware! She has potions!

(She and the wash women were a part of the Spettacolo di Mistero.  Or were they? Things change rather slowly in Italy.)

corner view

corner view :: good memories

Louisiana | Summer 2010

Sometimes I wonder if I would be able to hold on to the good memories as well as I do if I hadn't taken up the hobby of photography. I'm sure my daughter reconstructs memories based on images I share with her. For instance,  I am doubtful that she can remember this encounter in the country with her uncle and cousin, but I know that she could spin a believable story about it nonetheless, while convincing herself that she truly remembers it. (I do remember it well because at the time I was thinking that it was a good thing that her father was not present for all that gun business. Emotions ensure lasting memories.)

Sometimes I wonder when I will ever commit to systematically organizing and printing all of those good memories, instead of just random pockets of them.  I know that the images on the external hard drives are useless and will get tossed, or lost, or forgotten, or stolen. But, there they sit.

And then I ask myself:  Does the cobbler's son ever have a nice pair of shoes? I think not!

Wait...what?
I don't even know what I'm rambling about here...
Thanks for reading, nonetheless.

a bit of photography magic

"It looks like I am looking at God and He is smiling sunshine." - Young One, age 9

Upon first seeing our gallery of photos from a recent photo session, a good friend of mine said, "You all sure do clean up nicely."

Well, I guess we do.

But I have to tell you...this magic was created by the amazingly talented partnership of Susanna and Joe. You can check out their work here.

I've wanted professional family portraits for a while...okay...nine years! And I finally took the occasion of Young One's upcoming First Communion to schedule a session. While I wanted the focus on her, I am pleased that Richard and I cleaned up a bit and joined in the session.

These were taken in our "back yard" and in a neighboring village. Can you believe the perfect timing of the cherry blossoms? We totally lucked out with an early bloom. And those steps? Goodness. Those steps make me unnaturally happy. And the best part? This is our home. It's the best place to make a family picture.

I cannot recommend this team of Susanna Avery-Lynch and Joe Lynch enough. Funny, kind, respectful, smart...true professionals who work smoothly as a team, before, after, and during the shoot. The prints are perfect, too.

focus, baby, focus

What happens when you hand your husband the big fancy camera for a photo of you because you are rarely in the shots and the scenery today is just gorgeous and the walk was lovely and there's no child around needing attention and you've committed to being in more of the pictures in the photo books and scrap books, beyond iPhone selfies...

And he says, "Why is there only one red square lit up when I look into the camera?"

Focus, Baby, Focus.

And you take the camera from him, set that puppy on auto, and hope for the best.

yoga inspiration in lisbon

Clearly, yoga has caught on in Lisbon when middle-aged men are practicing in the streets...or she is just that damn inspiring.

I love a good photo bomb, don't you?

While this is my absolute favorite Lisbon photo from our recent gathering of girlfriends there, you can find others as well as some of our travel details for Lisbon here.

folgaria: east vs west

I spent a day in the Alpine village of Folgaria recently. Located near the border where the Veneto region meets Trentino-Alto Adige, it's considered a good skiing destination in this part of Italy, though it's not quite ski season yet.

I did meet a character of a property owner there who did his best to describe the difference between the west and east sides of town to me; I love that there is such perceived differences in the two, in the one-mile stretch.

I come from a small place called Grand Point, though grand is certainly a misnomer. Locals there will profess a marked difference between the "front of Grand Point" and the "back of Grand Point." My family hails from the front part. When I was in middle school, I used to ride my bike the quarter of a mile to my friend's house in the back. It was like another world, just like the east and west of Folgaria. Just like it. East is preferred, according to my new friend...though his nicer properties are in the west.

These photos were all taken in the mile stretch that separates the two parts of Folgaria centro, which is mostly a pedestrian zone during the high season. I'm sure you can see all the differences, can't you?

We are more alike than we are different. Aren't we?
