corner view :: light & darkness

Strasbourg, France
December 2013

I have never, ever, never seen anything quite like Strasbourg, France at Christmastime. It seemed that every avenue, every little alley, every insignificant passageway was aglow as the darkness set in each evening. And this was only topped by the elaborate decorations covering one timber-framed building after the other, visible mostly during the hours of light.  And then there were the markets. Oh, the markets! Little sparkling wooden huts emitting irresistible aromas around each and every turn: crepes, vin chaud, pain d'Epices...market overload.

I'd certainly like to return in the spring...when darkness means darkness and the huts have long been put away for next winter.

Corner View is a weekly appointment shared by people around the globe, an appointment started in the spring of 2009 by Jane in Spain and currently hosted by Francesca over at Fuori Borgo. We welcome you to join us; next week's theme is "a good read."

  1. I never went to Strasbourg but I want even more to go now. Looks so magical...maybe to many people in the streets?

    1. Yes! We really did enjoy the area of France. I would like to return when the crowds are not so thick.

  2. Beautiful! They love Christmas lights here in China, so we have seen some pretty good displays. We went to Pizza Hut the other day and it was so funny they have the waiters in red aprons and Santa hats. Some places have the Chinese New Year decorations up, but most places still have Christmas decorations. Kind of weird given Christmas was over two weeks ago!

    1. Maybe they are doing the Italian version. LOL. Here, Christmas lasts at least until January 6, the Epiphany. This year I had to work on January 6; the streets were absolutely bare as I drove in bc the day is a holiday, without exception.
