music flashback

{February 8, 2007}

And in other music news, Young One has just recently finished the first piano book and has "graduated" to the next level. Her true commitment to it waxes and wanes with the moon, but it continues to be a nonnegotiable for us. I've never heard an adult say, "I wish my parents had not forced me to learn an instrument when I was a child!" Not even once. Like you, I've heard the opposite over and over and over.

As I sit here she is downstairs at the keyboard with Richard, who is her biggest fan and coach. I hear in a perfect whining pitch, "It's HARD!"

And I love his response: "Everything worth doing is hard at first. Keep going. 1, 2, 3, F Sharp, G, F Sharp. It's the same but down an octave."

Greek to me, of course.

The mister has committed to a very public (albeit inconsequential) performance on his trumpet. Yes, the man was once quite the horn blower. I think I've seen the instrument out of its case for a total of five times since I met him back in 2001. He's a people pleaser; someone asked for a favor and he obliged before thinking of the consequences.  Should be a fun ride getting those chops back!

......
Have a lovely weekend.
