Autumnal Splendor in Northern Italy :: Changing Leaves |
To Autumn
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

I think it is going to be a couple more weeks before they change her in Georgia! It is still to warm. Had a couple cold days, but I guess not enough to signal to the trees bring on fall.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to have happened overnight here. Though, the leaves above with the slightest bit of green prove that it's been a little at a time. The crispness of fall has barely arrived.

The crispness has arrived in my part of the world. The nights are chilly..
ReplyDeleteI think it will be here shortly, but even this morning was still muggy...icky muggy.

Wonderful colors - and I like your header very much.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kristin. I'm afraid that those grapes are long gone from the vines now.

Italian Autumn poem: La nebbia a gl'irti colli/ piovigginando sale/ e sotto il maestrale/ urla e biancheggia il mar ... San Martino (11 November), by G Carducci. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I must admit I have not read much Italian poetry (short of a translation or two) other than things found in children's books.

Lovely autumn post!
ReplyDeleteDana, I like this poem by Vincenzo Cardarelli. It reminds me of Leopardi and my high school years... M
ReplyDeleteAutunno. Già lo sentimmo venire
nel vento d'agosto,
nelle pioggie di settembre
torrenziali e piangenti
e un brivido percorse la terra
che ora, nuda e triste,
accoglie un sole smarrito.
Ora passa e declina,
in quest'autunno che incede
con lentezza indicibile,
il miglior tempo della nostra vita
e lungamente ci dice addio.
Vincenzo Cardarelli
ugghhh.... i have a hard enough time with literal Italian. Figurative mixed with literal will require some study this weekend!
