corner view :: something difficult

Instagram Photo | 10 March 2015

When I first met with the piano teacher in January, knowing a few things about me she expected that I had at least some knowledge of music: after all, most Americans experience some form of music education during the K-12 school years; after all, I am married to a music educator (who has changed career paths after nearly 25 years of teaching music in schools); after all, I do have a ten-year-old daughter who is proving to be quite musical; after all, I am an avid supporter of the arts; after all, I hail from Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans.

Nope. Nothing. Nada. Zero. I started from the beginning.

We are moving forward, slowly, but let me assure you that this is one of the most difficult endeavors I have undertaken... quite possibly, EVER. Maybe the only thing more difficult for me were the first several months of being a new mother. Maybe.

Making my fingers on both hands do what my eyes read and my mind commands, keeping it all in sync, while maintaining some type of beat or rhythm...oh, my.  I've read that challenging your mind as an adult wards off dementia. No chance of dementia here, my friends.

Best part?

  1. Keep at it ! It will come! I have taken piano lessons. I am not very good at it as I find reading the music very difficult for me! I can only play when like a child I mark the notes with the letter the correspond to.

    1. I'm not sure that I'll ever be any good at it, but for now I am committed to learning. First thing my resident teacher told me...Don't mark the notes! LOL.

  3. I see what you mean .... :) Several years ago, I decided to take guitar lessons. I was totally beginner. My poor teacher had bored a lot with me! I have memories of pain in fingers, incredibly difficult .... Two years later, I stopped classes. Now the guitar is always stored in a cover in my room ... :)

    1. Yes! I think I am quite boring as well. After the first month I had to ask her to slow down.

    PS did you choose your music teacher before or after you saw his/her white house? :)

    1. A great thing about this teacher is that she comes to my house! AND she gives both flute (kiddo) and piano lessons. We've had some schedule conflicts lately, so we ended up at her house. It is divine.

  7. That is so awesome! My husband is a piano teacher, in fact he is teaching a lesson right now. I can hear them upstairs. It's a language that we speak. Keep at it!! I'm impressed.

  8. It is so impressive to me that you are starting something from scratch. It's I souring and makes me feel I don't challenge myself enough. What a wonderful instrument too!
