Poesia di Natale
Memorization tasks are still very common in Italian primary schools. Young One is often assigned a poem,a rhyme or a prayer for memorization, to be recited in front of the entire class. The lines are generally fairly short and not extremely challenging...until this Christmas, that is.
She memorized a beautiful, albeit lengthy, version of the Christmas story for which she eventually received high marks from her second grade teacher. Well deserved high marks, if I do say so myself.

ReplyDeleteI've always known she was fluent, but it's still neat to see her speaking in Italian. My favorite part is the end though when she's DONE!

ReplyDeleteI know what you meant, Emily. The "done" is, of course, directly related to the fact that I coerced her to do the recording with me. It's like, "Done. Are you happy? I'm not doing it again."

This sounds like a dumb question, I know, but... can she really 'skip' from Italian to English like that? Amazing.
ReplyDeleteShe weaves the two without thought. It's pretty natural for her and other bilingual kids like her that we know. Ah-mazing, yes! All of them.
