corner view :: spontaneity

Yesterday as I was preparing dinner, a little chef appeared spontaneously to offer her assistance. Since she appeared in her apron and chef hat, I knew she was a serious little chef ready for a serious chef task. I handed her the chef knife and quickly explained her task. I'm not sure who was more surprised by that; it's a pretty big knife.  As expected, she completed the task with the utmost attention.

For the record, she refused to eat the broccoli beyond the tiniest of bites. It was epic.

I do envy her spontaneity.
She found her apron and created the hat in a matter of minutes while I was mincing garlic and ginger, oblivious to her creative flurry.

I wish I could always be so open to her spontaneity.

Just a note:  Having this paper roll and a small cabinent of simple art supplies tucked in a corner of our living room has led to all sorts of spontaneous creations over time.

    1. THanks, Kelleyn. It's an Amy Butler fabric from several years ago. I have no idea if it is still available. I loved the color at the time and STILL do! (luckily)

  4. my kids eat broccoli only if it's "orecchiette coi broccoli/cime di rapa", i.e. with lots of garlic, chili, and pancetta/sausage - and orecchiette of course. But I never knew or ate broccoli until I was in my 20s, and I grew up just fine! :) Buon Appetito!

    1. This had lots of olive oil, garlic, pepperoncini and parmesan to top it off. It's the only way I'll eat it!

  5. Wonderful! I think that one of the best things we can do with our children and grandchildren is to have them work beside us in the kitchen chopping, mixing, blending, cooking, and baking.
    Love the hat and apron and that roll for paper! I think I will get that for both my kids' homes for the 6 grandchildren's spontannity.

  6. I am thrilled to hear that you have the art cabinet. We did for many years. Just tonight I thought we need to make a space in the kitchen for our youngest. I am very sorry that he doesn't love art like his sisters. He just needs supplies and a little encouragement!

    1. In the beginning I was always the one pulling it out. In the past year she has shown initiative and interest. I love it.

  8. What a fabulous hat! Would you like my children to teach her about the Zombies?...they love the brains of children who haven't eaten their broccoli.

  9. don't you just love how kids can "become" so randomly and quickly. I love to be greeted by these different personas when they show up. You captured this beautifully. I was treated to a goth just a few days ago. My oldest came out in black jeans, shirt, black fishnet fingerless gloves (from her Halloween vampire costume), a black flower head band (another costume item) and black lips!! She strolled through the kitchen and casually announced she'd "changed her style to goth." ACK!! I hope it doesn't stick :) Although it made me smile all evening.

  10. I do love it, and it makes me smile, too. Mine is quite shy about it and asked me not to share those photos on FB for fear that her good friend (who is so, so cool in her eyes) would see it on her mom's feed and think she wasn't so cool. That part, I hate! I mean....already? I think it's just part of her personality at the moment and am hoping she can break free of it...if so, I'd be happy with a goth girl! I just want her to be free!
