Atilla's Throne
Torcello Island / Venice, Italy
December 2012

The chair, carved from an entire piece of white stone, dates to the fifth century. Its famous namesake never made it to Torcello, and the chair was likely used by the local leaders during formal meetings. Torcello is the first Venetian island with inhabitants and was once bustling with activity, but the population now hovers around twenty residents, maybe less. My husband and I recently spent a night on the island with a pair of couples, and my very chilly early morning walk revealed, well, no one, just ducks overhead and cats underfoot.  The aloneness was beautiful.

  3. Hi!
I'm a fellow corner view participant. I like this photo...alone and yet seeming like anyone could just take a swim out there and sit down for a spell!

  5. wow only 20 residents. That's interesting and I would have loved to see how big the stone was before they started carving.

    1. I think about how the stone was transported to the tiny island in the fifth century. Amazing.

  7. Oh lucky lucky you to be able to go somewhere so absolutely beautiful for a little spot of aloneness. Beauty is slightly difficult to find in my home-town right now - most of our lovely old buildings have been demolished due to 'earthquake damage' (or so our city overlords tell us) and we are surrounded by vacant lots and shiny new buildings made of glass, steel and concrete.

  11. Great chair - like Francesca, I want to know if you sat in it? I love "aloneness" - especially when I am out of town and away from the stress of every day life. Glad you had a good vacation!
