corner view :: morning, noon, night

When I moved to Italy years ago, I remember receiving the advice that I should never order a cappuccino after mid morning, as an Italian would never drink a cappuccino after that time. "We need to blend in as much as we can," I was told and dutifully repeated to others. (Like my coffee habits would be the first clue to my foreignness!) I conformed, nonetheless, likely more for the need to respect the foreign culture than to be mistaken for a native.

Well...I've been here a while now, and I have to report, I often see Italians ordering cappuccini at odd times, living dangerously outside of the norms of society and  the accepted dietary guidelines. I can also report, however, that I have never, ever, not even once, witnessed an Italian order a cappuccino after a meal, lunch or dinner. At this point, I couldn't imagine doing it either...all that milk on top of the meal would be just too much to digest. I would never judge you if you did, though...as long as you don't count the number of glasses of vino I consume, of course.

So...what about you? Cappuccino: morning, noon, and night or strictly breakfast fare?

  1. Cappuccino is something that is ordered out at a coffee shop only for me, not with a meal, not made at home. I remember stopping for one in Rome in the afternoons - definitely a Tourist! I didn't know there were unspoken rules attached.

  7. When I was pregnant with Jericho, I'd often order cappuccino decaffeinato from Pino after my doctor's appointments. I can only imagine how much it must have made him cringe every time.

    1. LOL...I'm sure Pino has seen it all. A colleague, fresh off the plane from teh States ordered a "latte" and was surprised to get a cup of warm milk! I never laughed so hard...with her, of course ;)

  9. I can have cappuccino any time of day, I just love it so much. I'd never have it after the meal, though. Just a biscuit on the side :-). And I do love espresso macchiato too but whenever I ask in coffee shops here for a drop of foamy milk in my espresso, I get a weird look from baristas. Like they have never heard of macchiato though they work in chains that call themselves: "Italian about coffee".

    Un abbraccio,
    K.
