corner view :: exotic

It's all about perspective, isn't it?  I've had that concept on my mind quite a bit lately -- perspective. I grew up in the rural south of the United States, where things that seemed normal to me would likely seem exotic to you. Ever been to an authentic crawfish boil? For me, that was life. It continues to be for family still there. It's a good life, I tell ya.

stainless oil

My life has changed a bit since then. I bet yours has, too. A few weeks ago we sent our 30 liter stainless steel container down to Sicily with Nonno Nino. He will return it filled with this year's olive oil from his family's production, and when he does we'll place it in our cantina under the stairs with my husband's wine collection. Just ten years ago, this would have seemed incredibly exotic to me. Now, I can't imagine life without any of it: the oil, the husband, and especially not the vino. Wait. . . this isn't a post about vino? How did I get there?

  2. Oh that IS exotic! Well it is to me anyway! We do make wine and olive oil here in New Zealand . . . but sadly we don't have vats of either substance sitting under our stairs.

  5. Very jealous! I put olive on/in everything, but I imagine that is a "tad" better than the Publix olive oil I buy!

  6. how did you get to wine? because you live in a land where "all'ulivo si abbraccia la vite" (Fabrizio De Andre')!

  7. My friends who live in the farming region of Piemonte have people drive up in an Ape holding a huge vat of red wine. They then funnel the wine into all of the extra bottles they have lying around and re-cork them. They couldn't understand why I kept raving about how amazing the whole process was. But, let's face it, a vat of wine delivered to your door? Awesome.

  10. How wonderful! I remember how cool I thought it was when our Italian friends went up to their house in the mountains and brought back with them olive oil from their own trees. The oil was very fruty in compartison to some of the oil you get here in the states. Have a great week!

  13. Quite a contrast: from crawfish boils to annual storage of olive oil and wine! Makes living in Ohio sound a bit boring. But as I love this place, I'm okay with a bit of boring. It's all about what we get used to and being content with what we have.
    Vino sounds good right now.

  18. It always surprises me the way our view of what's exotic changes as we grow and move from place to place. Well said!
