Over time, I've learned that I prefer experiences over things. With the encouragement of a dear friend who daily lives the motto of "Go Big or Go Home," I set my sights on a special experience to celebrate my 40th year. As luck would have it, the stars were aligned (no simple feat), and I was able to travel to New Orleans, LA with my little family to meet my bigger family for a stay in the Crescent City during Carnival, or Mardi Gras.

Without a doubt this is an experience that will stay with me and those I love for a lifetime. I couldn't think of a better way to welcome forty. I am grateful to everyone who came together to celebrate and, above all, to my dear and generous Richard.

More photos from our time together in NOLA can be found on Flickr. Additionally, here's an older post about the "real" Mardi Gras of New Orleans, the one for the locals that the throngs of tourists miss. I'm not sure how I'll be able to stay away next year.

  1. So glad you got to go home and visit with your family for your birthday. I think your friends motto is a great way to live life. I have never been to Mardi gras despite how clost it is to me, someday. Love New Orleans though. It is a great city!

I just planned a Mardi Gras Party here for our camp community and it was so much fun. I would love to get to NO someday and be there for a Mardi Gras parade.
