I'm jumping on the monthly "present participle list" bandwagon this year, partly because I'm excited that there are people who can identify present participles and partly because I'm hoping it will end this blogging break I seem to have permanently taken.
This is what we've been up to in May 2015...only one present participle needed:
SURVIVING our crazy month of May, by the numbers:
Six performances of Aladdin Jr. the kiddo's debut performance in a musical. (I am so damn proud of that girl.)
One mother visiting.
Four nights in Paris.
One pea festival.
Two old friends visiting from Rhode Island.
One huge project deadline met.
One first talent show completed.
Two extra kiddos for a week.
One fantastic piano recital. (Three-and-a-half years of lessons is looking good!)
Countless hours of flat picking guitar practice.
Two even older friends visiting from Florida.
One dozen oysters.
One missed book club night. (The Round House by Louise Erdrich. Loved it.)
One new car battery.
One cherry festival.
Eight tomato plants thriving.
One cruise on the Seine River, one cruise on Lake Garda.
Two wineries, one day.
One surprise visit from a father.
One week-long birthday celebration for the kiddo.
Four dozen cupcakes, plus five dozen more.
Ten loads of laundry waiting.
281,197 steps.
Twelve more days until summer break.
Too many bottles of wine...how else do you expect we could make it through?!

I'm jumping on the monthly "present participle list" bandwagon this year, partly because I'm excited that there are people who can identify present participles and partly because I'm hoping it will end this blogging break I seem to have permanently taken.
This is what we've been up to in April 2015:
DOWNLOADING new-to-me podcasts. I go through phases and stages with podcasts, and right now I am hot on them. A new-to-me one this month that I am thoroughly enjoying is Radio Lab. (Thanks, Lucia!) Have you listened in yet? The most recent one I listened to had me sobbing while out on my walk, but they aren't all so emotional. They do, however, make me think. I like that.
LISTENING to this classic album: Ella and Satchmo. I mean, really, do I ever need anything else if I have this?
REVELING in the turntable (that's been sitting in the garage) that is now set up in our living room. We are loving the vinyl, baby! Vinyl, as in records. Did you know that it is possible to buy newly-pressed records? Well, it is. Richard is quickly developing a (habit) collection.
IMBIDING. The cocktail du jour for sipping while we spin the vinyl: the Negroni. Another thing new to us, inspired by Instagramming peeps in Rome. Simple & strong.
TRAVELING to another European capital: Zagreb. We went because we were curious and because we all had time off simultaneously. We especially enjoyed the chance to stay at this lovely hotel and the opportunity to just take a break.
WALKING daily again. Spring in these parts is pretty good at inspiring that.
CULTIVATING our small patch of this earth. The veggie "crop" (Ha! tomatoes, zucchini & herbs) is in the ground and the potted flowers on our patio are many. I do enjoy this activity that has become our ritual to welcome the summer.
CRUISING with the scooters. We are certainly fair weather scooter riders, and it's finally (sort of) warm enough to put the scooters on the road again. I am still having fun with the VicenzaViaVespa Instagram account, though I'm not posting as frequently as I'd like. We went on what Young One deemed "an epic ride" and headed over to the Colli Euganei recently. Again, Veneto is just lovely, folks.
ANTICIPATING the cherries and peas. It's is just about that time. Also looking forward to the arrival of my mother in 10 days. She will be with us for an entire month!

March 2015
EXPERIMENTING with my film camera. After first loading the 35mm film, I had to work up courage to press the shutter button. Weirdo. I should receive the results of the first roll any day now.
STRESSING over a pending project deadline at work. Every year I swear to manage it better and every year it only gets worse.
GRIEVING for the families of Germanwings Flight 9525.
LISTENING to a new-to-me podcast, Invisibilia; it "explores the intangible forces that shape human behavior – things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions." A friend sent me the link & I'm a bit hooked.
SHOWING up to events at / with my daughter's school with gusto! After all, this is the last- ever chess tournament, the last-ever fun run, and the last-ever Holy Wednesday prayer procession of primary school. Ever.
APPRECIATING the fact that I have a husband who sleeps under our roof most nights and who is generally home before 18:00. This is after he was away for ten nights in March. I can handle it all alone, but I really don't want to.
CELEBRATING Young One's first role in a musical; she has been cast as {.....insert drum rollll.....} the BAKER! in a local production of Aladdin Jr. She is ecstatic, over-joyed, energized, truly excited beyond belief. I think she might have one line in the hour-long production. There is a lot to learn from this child, who thought perhaps she would like to be cast as Jasmyn, and her reaction, friends. A lot. I am quite pleased, quite pleased indeed.
PACKING our bags for an upcoming road trip, East.

I'm jumping on the monthly "present participle list" bandwagon this year, partly because I'm excited that there are people who can identify present participles and partly because I'm hoping it will end this blogging break I seem to have permanently taken. I hope to continue with the "weekend (-ing)" posts soon as well.
As February 2015 draws to a close, we three are ...
Celebrating The middle school has been chosen and it's something all three of us feel very good about at this time, even if Young One continues to remind us that we promised she could change if things don't work out. We are fairly confident that they will because she is very fortunate to have been selected for the music section.
Cooking Another goal of the year is to add more of the food I grew up eating to my family table. So far we've made a great jambalaya, a not-so-great jambalaya and a rockin' shrimp creole. I'm excited to be learning (from books, from online searches, from YouTube, from family) about what goes into these dishes. There is so much about cooking that can't be understood simply through the words of a recipe.
Traveling We joined some friends for a long weekend in Nice. I love France, even in the rain.
Abstaining My favorite part of being a Catholic is the tradition, so you might imagine I love the Lenten period. My Lenten sacrifice to save my soul this year is alcohol, as in I will not consume a drop from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. So far, so good. Young One has given up meat...except at lunch...and when it's the only thing available.
Changing We removed the 42 inch television from the main floor / living room and have replaced our 10+ year-old grand couch for a 2-person love seat. I am loving that change, and none of us misses the television. We also created a music space for Richard in the taverna after doing some much-needed spring cleaning. (Oh, that love seat that was supposed to be delivered 25 February...we haven't seen it yet.)
Marveling Those bulbs I planted in the late fall? They are either in full bloom or poking their little heads from the soil. | And on another note...the Katy Perry concert in Milan was a marvel unlike anything I've ever experienced. Yes...we love the Pop Princess.
Planning Spring and summer break will be here before we know it. The plans are in motion, some reservations have been made, some flights booked. I love traveling as much as I love being at home; it's a constant conflict.
See you around soon! I blogged seven times in the short month of February. I'm on a roll!
xoxo
